Overview of a plate of caprese skewers

We're huge fans of Caprese, as we're sure many of you are. However, they can be quite difficult to serve as appetizers. That's why we made this Caprese on a Stick

You get all the yummy flavors and textures of Caprese, such as creamy fresh mozzarella balls, juicy, sweet cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil. But they're skewered, so they're easy to pop into your mouth, making great appetizers.

We also added green olives for a salty, briny taste, and drizzled the skewers with an easy homemade balsamic vinegar glaze made with maple syrup and balsamic vinegar. This adds tanginess and extra sweetness, making these appetizers the perfect bite. Enjoy!

  1. Consider folding the basil leaves into quarters. Not only will this make the presentation of your Caprese skewers seem more well-rounded, but you'll also find that it is easier to thread the basil as it's less likely to tear.
  2. If you can't find the mozzarella balls, buy a large block of mozzarella and cut it into small appropriately-sized squares. Doing so will give you a similar effect to using mozzarella balls, but may be cheaper.
  3. While you can make these Caprese Skewers slightly early, don't make them too far ahead of time, as the basil will start to wilt even in the fridge. It is best to make them no longer than an hour or two before your event.

This caprese skewers recipe contains a slew of nutritious and wonderful ingredients, including the following:

Cherry Tomatoes

The cherry tomatoes are the ideal size to fit comfortably on your Caprese sticks. Not only do they help to give your appetizer some wonderful color, but cherry tomatoes are ideal for adding a bit of zesty kick to your dish. At the same time, they can add just a dash of sweetness without being overpowering.

Fresh Basil Leaves

Which Caprese appetizer would be complete without the addition of some lovely fresh basil leaves? Not only is it a traditional component of the dish, but it helps add that herbaceous flavor that completes your Caprese.

Fresh Mozzarella Balls

Fresh mozzarella balls add a bit of texture to these appetizers, while giving a creamy, yet delicate flavor which serves to underline the subtle sweetness of the main toes and that zesty sour tang of the olives.

Green Olives

Green olives are the star of the show in a Caprese appetizer. While mozzarella is soft and unassuming, and tomatoes give a subtle sweet flavor, the green olives add an almost aggressive flavor to the dish. However, it is perfectly balanced by the more neutral and unassuming ingredients.

Is caprese a healthy snack?

Yes, it is! Caprese is an excellent source of potassium which is essential for healthy blood pressure. And it's a good source of calcium and iron which supports strong bones and good energy levels. It also contains fiber and protein which fill you up.

What is the difference between bruschetta and caprese?

Bruschetta is a snack that's made of toasted bread slices which are topped with a mix of basil and tomato. Meanwhile, Caprese is a salad that's made of fresh basil leaves, tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella.

How to make Caprese Toothpicks or Skewers?

If you're looking for something quick and easy to make for an upcoming event, then the Caprese appetizer is a perfect choice. This wonderful dish takes less than half an hour to prepare and complete, leaving you free to prepare other things.

Here's what you're going to do. First, combine the balsamic vinegar and maple syrup in a saucepan or small pot. After bringing it to a boil, leave it to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

While the glaze simmers, thread your green olives, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls and basil leaves onto the skewers. Try to find a pattern that works and sticks to it.

Typically, you'd use about three cherry tomatoes per skewer, but remember to alternate ingredients so that none of the flavors are concentrated in any specific parts of the skewer.

Place the skewers on a serving dish or platter along with the balsamic glaze, and you're ready to serve.
