Craving the irresistible crunch and flavor of KFC-style popcorn chicken at home? This air fryer recipe brings you a healthier, quick-to-make version, packed with all the crispy goodness you love. Featuring a perfectly seasoned spice blend designed to be made in bulk, this recipe ensures you’ll have plenty on hand for future batches or other dishes.

Whether you're planning a family dinner, a party snack, or a quick treat, this recipe is a game-changer for anyone who loves fried chicken but wants a homemade twist.

This recipe is perfect for recreating your favorite takeout snack at home with less guilt. The air fryer method keeps it lighter, while the blend of spices ensures bold, crave-worthy flavors. Plus, you can whip it up in no time with easy-to-find ingredients.

  • Seasoning Blend: Use only the amount needed for this batch and store the rest in an airtight container for up to a month. It works great on other dishes like grilled chicken or roasted vegetables.
  • Coating Tips: Make sure the chicken pieces are evenly coated with flour and seasoning for maximum crunch. Let them rest for 5 minutes before air frying to ensure the coating adheres.
  • Air Fryer Tips: Avoid overcrowding the basket. Cook in batches if necessary to maintain the crispiness.

Pair your KFC-style popcorn chicken with dipping sauces like honey mustard, ranch, or spicy mayo. Serve alongside fries, coleslaw, or a fresh salad for a complete meal. It also makes a great party appetizer or movie-night snack.

  • Chicken Alternatives: Use chicken thighs for a juicier texture or tofu for a vegetarian option.
  • Gluten-Free: Swap all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Spice Level: Adjust the cayenne pepper to make it milder or spicier.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, use the air fryer to restore the crispiness without overcooking.

  • Chicken Breast: Cut into bite-sized pieces for quick cooking and easy snacking.
  • Flour: Forms the base of the crispy coating.
  • Seasoning Blend: A mix of herbs and spices that give the chicken its signature KFC-inspired flavor. Use the excess blend as a rub for grilled meats or roasted veggies.
  • Eggs and Milk: Helps the coating stick to the chicken and adds richness.
  • Breadcrumbs: Adds extra crunch to the coating.

Can I bake instead of air-frying the chicken?

Yes, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispiness.

How can I store leftover seasoning blend?

Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to a month. Use it as a rub for grilled chicken or roasted vegetables.

What’s the best way to prevent the coating from falling off?

Let the coated chicken rest for 5-10 minutes before air frying to help the coating adhere better.

  • 2 Eggs - beaten

  • Cooking Spray

Seasoning Blend
  • 3 tablespoons Paprika

  • 2 tablespoons Garlic - powder

  • 2 tablespoons Tarragon - dried

  • 2 tablespoons Thyme - dried

  • 2 tablespoons Basil - dried

  • 1 tablespoon Onion - powder

  • 1 tablespoon Black Pepper

  • 1 tablespoon White Pepper

  • 1 tablespoon Mustard - powder

  • 1 tablespoon Ginger - ground

  • 1 tablespoon Salt

  • 2 teaspoons Oregano - dried

  • 2 teaspoons Celery Salt

Spicy Option
  • 1 tablespoon Cayenne pepper - powder

Instructions

Preheat the air fryer to 400 °F/ 200 °C and apply cooking spray to the cooking tray.

Mix all the seasoning blend ingredients and store them in a sanitized glass jar or spice bottle.

Place the arrowroot starch and one tablespoon of the seasoning blend into a bowl, mix thoroughly, and set aside.

Place the beaten eggs, yogurt, and 1 tablespoon of the seasoning blend into another bowl, mix thoroughly, and set aside.

Place the breadcrumbs in a bowl and set them aside.

Prepare a serving tray to place the chicken once it’s finished cooking.

Separate the chicken into four batches, and cook each batch separately.

Take one batch at a time, work with one piece of chicken, coat it in the arrowroot mixture, cover it in the egg mixture, coat in the breadcrumbs, and repeat this process with each piece of chicken.

Place the chicken pieces in the air-fryer tray to not touch and cook for 5 minutes, then turn and cook for another 5 minutes.

Remove from the air fryer and repeat with the other batches.

Serve warm with your favorite condiments for dipping.
