Preheat the waffle iron
Pre-heating the waffle maker
Slather each slice of bread on one side with 1/2 tablespoon of butter.   
Buttered the bread
Put 2 slices of bread onto your waffle iron.   
Prepare 2 slices of bread in the machine
Add one slice of cheddar cheese to the bread. Top with one piece of ham and one slice of Gruyère cheese.

Set another slice of bread on the cheese, buttered side up.

Close the waffle iron, but do not press it down, or the cheese will ooze out of the sandwich.  Let the sandwich cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

Remove the grilled cheese from the waffle iron and place it on a plate. Repeat steps 3-6 to make the second grilled cheese sandwich.
