Most people associate crab rangoons with Chinese cuisine, since the original recipe may have been a Burmese dish.

However, it is believed crab rangoons were created in the US since cream cheese is not a staple part of Chinese cuisine.

The first mention of crab rangoons was mentioned on Trader Vic's menu. A worker named Joe Young is credited with creating crab rangoons. Nevertheless, we are thankful that Joe Young created these crispy creamy delights.

Traditionally, crab rangoons are deep-fried in oil. However, to make them healthier, they are air fried.

For this Air Fryer Crab Rangoons, the filling consists of cream cheese, lump crab meat, green onions, chives, red bell pepper, garlic, soy sauce, salt, and black pepper.

The filling is sealed in gluten-free wonton wrappers and fried until it is golden. The crab rangoons are served with a sweet and sour Chinese red sauce to create the perfect appetizer.

Can you air Fry Crab Rangoon?

Yes, you can air fry crab rangoons. It's much healthier than deep-fried crab rangoons, and the crab rangoons will still be crispy and crunchy.

How long should I Airfry Crab Rangoons?

It takes about 12-15 minutes to air fry crab rangoons.

How do you reheat Crab Rangoon in an air fryer?

To reheat the crab rangoons in the air fryer, preheat your air fryer to 325 °F. Place the crab rangoons into the air fryer basket and air fry them for 1-2 minutes until the filling is heated through.

Are crab rangoons still good if left out overnight?

Crab rangoons are not safe to consume if they are left out overnight. Food can only sit at room temperature for 2 hours. The danger zone ranges from 40 °F-140 °F, basically room temperature. This is where bacteria develop rapidly.

The number of bacteria on or in a food can double in as little as 20 minutes. After 2 hours, so many bacteria will grow on the crab rangoons that they are unsafe to eat.

While the crab rangoons may show no signs of spoilage, you could end up with food poisoning if you eat them. So store any leftover crab rangoons in an airtight container in the fridge.

Chinese Red Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Pineapple Juice

  • 1/4 cup Orange Juice

  • 3 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice

  • 1/2 cup Sugar-Free Sweetener

  • 3 drops of Red Food Coloring

  • 2 tablespoons Arrowroot Starch

  • 2 tablespoons Water

Crab Rangoons
  • 6 ounces Cream Cheese, softened

  • 6 ounces Lump Crab Meat

  • 2 Green Onions, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon freshly chopped Chives

  • 1 small Red Bell Pepper, chopped

  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced

  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

  • 1 teaspoon Soy Sauce

  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper

  • 21 Gluten-Free Wonton Wrappers

  • 2 tablespoons of Water

  • Olive Oil Spray

Chinese Red Sauce

To a small pot, add the pineapple juice, orange juice, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, lemon juice, sugar-free sweetener, and food coloring, and stir to combine.

Place the red sauce over medium-high heat and let it come to a boil.

Once the red sauce comes to a boil, whisk the arrowroot starch and water in a small bowl until combined.

Add the arrowroot mixture into the red sauce while whisking. Cook the red sauce for 3-5 minutes, stirring until it thickens.

Remove the red sauce from the stove and let it cool completely.

Crab Rangoons

Mix the cream cheese, lump crab meat, green onions, chives, red bell pepper, garlic, salt, soy sauce, and black pepper in a small bowl until combined.

Arrange the wonton wrappers on your countertop. Coat the edges of each wonton wrapper with water, using a pastry brush.

Place 1 1/2 teaspoons of the crab mixture in the center of each wonton. Do not overfill the wontons.

Grab one corner of the wonton wrapper and fold it over the filling to make a triangle. Bring the opposite ends of the triangle together, pushing out any air bubbles, and squeeze the edges to seal them.

Repeat with the remaining wontons.

Preheat the air fryer to 370 °F.

Place the crab rangoons into the air fryer basket in an even layer. Do not overcrowd the basket; the wonton will steam rather than air fry. It's best to cook the crab rangoons in batches.

Spray the crab rangoons with olive oil spray.

Cook the crab rangoons for 10 minutes, then turn them over and cook them for 2-5 minutes until they are crispy and golden brown.

Remove the crab rangoons from the air fryer and arrange them on a serving platter. Repeat with the remaining crab rangoons.

Pour the Chinese red sauce into a serving dish and serve it with the crab rangoons.
